Social media is yet another tech buzzword. Most simply, it's describes any site that allows interaction between users. That's a pretty big umbrella. And, not surprisingly, people are still wrestling with how to monetize the more popular social media sites.

Think social networking and names like Facebook, Orkut, MySpace, and Linkedin come to mind. Since social networking became an online norm there has been no dearth of opportunities and no limitations to possibilities. The initial wave of social networking came in the form of connecting with old and new friends, colleagues and people located in different geographical locations. But it didn't take long for corporate enterprises to see business opportunities within the trend and soon it also became a buzzing place for people to explore business ventures and ideas.

We're entering an exciting period in the history of the Web. Since the 90's, the Internet has embedded itself in our lives in ways we couldn't have imagined. I'd be hard pressed to find a lad in my school who doesn't have a MySpace, Facebook or Twitter profile, a Flickr account or a blog. Kids younger than me now interact confidently with the Web without fear of being labelled as geeks or nerdy.

Design on the Web has obviously come a long way too. The 'standards battle' appears to have been won, developers have been shown the light and it's only a matter of time before font tags and spacer gifs become a distant memory. We're past the 'browser wars' and Internet Explorer 6 is finally losing its stranglehold on the market, giving way to more standards-compliant contemporaries or at least IE7.

Typography is an important part of Web design. Just like in the print world, your content needs to be readable to your viewers for it to be of any use. As a general rule, you want to make sure your Web site provides as little resistance as possible to the user, and the easier your site is to read, the better. CSS provides three very useful properties to enhance the readability of your site: font, line-height, and letter-spacing.
